Theoretical Values and Methodological Implications Of The Prefaces of the Manifesto of the Communist Party
Zheng Zhaoli, Wang Hanyi (Fudan University)
Abstract The seven prefaces of the Manifesto of the Communist Party written by Marx and Engels has long been regarded as auxiliary texts, which covered up their own theoretical values. On the basis of an overview of the whole text, the prefaces have enriched and expanded the fundamental ideas of the Manifesto of the Communist Party, concisely expressing its core concepts and defending the basic standpoint of historical materialism. More importantly, keeping open to historical changes, the prefaces have provided an in-depth reflection of European Revolution and have in principle pointed out the possibilities of revolutionary road given the status quo of different countries, decisively clarifying the essential feature of historical materialism, namely the principle of concretization. Only by taking the prefaces and the Manifesto of the Communist Party as a whole and by combining the general principles and historical practices together can we truly grasp the theoretical values and methodological implications of Marxism in the modern era.
Key words prefaces of the Manifesto of the Communist Party; Karl Marx; Friedrich Engels; historical materialism; historical practice; principle of concretization
