The Evolution of the Notion “ Rhapsody is a Current of Ancient Poetry” During the Ming and Qing Dynasties
He Shihai (Sun Yat-sen University)
Abstract The notion that “Rhapsody ( fu ) is a current of Ancient Poetry ( gushi )” was a classic proposition in the historical study of fu, reflecting the widespread views on the origin, political and pedagogical functions of the fu genre, as well as its artistic features such as narrative realism. There was intensive investigation on this topic during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Literary critics drew upon the traditional notion that “rhapsody ( fu) originated from the Book of Songs ( Shi)” to repeatedly expound the view that rhapsody assimilated the Six Artistic Skills ( Liu Yi ) and emphasized its lyrical function, fictional characteristics and attention to rhyming, thereby enriching the theoretical connotations of this traditional proposition, while embodying the evolutionary trajectory of intellectual trends in literary criticism during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
